The List
General
This is a privately-run list. We are not in receipt of funding or support
from any governmental or other organisation and may impose whatever rules
we wish at any time. These rules and any amendments are adopted by simple
majority of those members voting within a specified time, usually 3 days,
of being proposed and come into force at once.
Membership of list
This list is intended as a friendship and support circle for Ex-Christians,
namely people who at one time regarded themselves as Christians but now
do not, either because they are now atheist/agnostic/humanist or because
they have joined another religion. We do not exclude Christians or others
from the list provided that they:
- Refrain from any form of proselytising.
- Refrain from spam or any commercial postings.
- Introduce themselves fully and honestly before posting for the first
time.
- Remind people of their viewpoint before venturing opinions likely
to be controversial on the list, if in any doubt refraining from expressing
such opinions. Examples of subjects likely to be controversial, but
this is far from exhaustive, are: gay/lesbian issues, abortion, euthanasia,
public figures' religious opinions.
- Respect the confidence of all other members of the list.
- Remember this is an ex-tian list, therefore inherently unwelcoming
to xtian ideas, so don't expect 'fair treatment'.
Your identity
You may post under a pseudonym if you want to but you may not have "sock
puppets" - i.e. multiple identities intended to mislead other members
of the list.
If you use a pseudonym others may not demand to know your real identity,
your reasons for using the pseudonym or reveal it if they happen to know
it, however you may of course disclose it at any time on the list.
Topics of conversation
Any topic which affects members of the list directly and on which the
other members may be able to provide help and advice may be discussed.
Political matters and items in the news should be conducted with extreme
moderation. Such discussions as get out of hand will be summarily cut
off by the list administrators.
The list is not intended to debate "apologetics", "biblical
(in)errancy", whether god(s) exist, whether Jesus existed, whether
hell exists and whether any on the list are going there. Such topics may
arise from time to time but the list isn't intended to debate them. Please
join other lists that are if you do.
Use of language
We specifically do *not* ban "rude" words and discussion, e.g.
of sexual matters however this should not be done gratuitously, excessively
or in a way calculated to offend specific groups (women, men, gays, lesbians,
ethnic or racial groups, etc.). Pleading that insult was not intended
does not alleviate the need to apologize and stop the offensive behavior.
Remember to appropriately mark humorous or ironic remarks where they
might be misconstrued.
Also remember regional differences in terms.
Disputes
If you have a personal issue with a list member first take it up with
that person off-list. If you cannot resolve the issue this way, contact
the list administrators off-list with CC to the person. The list administrators
may impose sanction of banning postings or removal from the list for a
period or permanently and their decision is final.
Joining
When you click the button below, an e-mail is generated. This is done
using your e-mail software. You must send the e-mail exactly as it is
generated. The list server will then send you a confirmation. Reply to
the confirmation e-mail and you're done.
